“ All young people should have the opportunity to play high school sports and have their personal dignity respected. Transgender students are no different. No one is harmed by allowing transgender students to compete consistent with who they are. Senate Bill S.1087 is clearly fueled by a fear and misunderstanding of transgender youth in our state. ” — Jeff Ayers
Unfortunately, South Carolina has joined seven other states facing anti-transgender bills this legislative session seeking to prevent transgender students to play on the athletic team that matches their gender identity.
Senator Cash and others are trying to capitalize on fear, misinformation and prejudice around a particular population. It’s fundamentally troubling that they are going to decide to take on kids and families that are doing their best to support their young people who already face so much stigma in the world.
There have been policy meetings among groups like the Alliance Defending Freedom and The Heritage Foundation, who have long had a mission of pushing anti-LGBTQ policies, to push this type of bill across the country. Senator Cash obviously takes his marching orders from these groups.
We can make known that we will not remain silent while he refuses to focus on protecting ALL students in South Carolina. We have defeated anti-trangender bills in the past and we can do again with your help TODAY.
The Senate Subcommittee on Education has scheduled a hearing on S.1087 for next Thursday morning.
With the current health crisis (COVID-19), members of the Senate Education Committee should be focusing their attention on protecting the health of ALL students in South Carolina. Instead, Senator Cash and others want to waste taxpayer dollars on promoting a discriminatory bigoted bill targeting transgender student-athletes. He has requested a public hearing on S.1087 next Thursday:
SENATE EDUCATION SUBCOMMITTEE Thursday, March 19, 2020 Subcommittee Members: Senator Talley, Chairman I am asking that you TAKE ACTION now. Click on the link below and send members of the Senate Education Subcommittee an email urging them to OPPOSE S.1087 and to focus their attention on passing legislation and offering guidance to the Department of Education and school districts that would protect ALL students in South Carolina during this pandemic.
