Test Drive Equality

Test Drive Equality

South Carolina is one of two states in the country with a pro-equality license plate.

South Carolina Equality, the Palmetto State’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) education and political advocacy organization offers a license plate available for purchase to the public at your local DMV.

In 2012, South Carolina became the second state with a pro-equality license plate. Maryland was the first in 2008. The license plate was created as a way of allowing residents of South Carolina to publicly display their support of community, culture and policy that encourages and advocates for equal treatment for all South Carolinians, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

With one of the lowest specialty license plate fees in the state ($25.00), the SC Equality license plate is an affordable way to show support for equality and the over 157,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals who call South Carolina home.

Support Our Work

How do I get a SC Equality license plate?

TO OBTAIN A NON-RESERVED EQUALLY PLATE:

Go to your regional DMV.

Complete the specialty plate application (MV-95) and pay the $25 fee. Ask for plate NPEQ!

Expect delivery within a few weeks.

50% of the fee goes directly to support our education  and outreach work.   We intentionally made the plate affordable so everyone who wants to show support for equality can do so!

Another option for some people, you try can to request the plate ONLINE.

If you have any other questions, please call or email us at SC Equality – info@scequality.org. We’re happy to answer your questions.

TO OBTAIN ONE OF THE FIRST 100 RESERVED PLATES

SC Equality has reserved 100 plates for donors who would like to make an additional donation of $250.00 to the 2018 strategic work of the SC Equality Foundation. This would be a tax deductible gift. (This donation may be made in installments if necessary.)

Once the $250.00 donation has been received, we will send you a SC Equality “Driving toward Equality” T-shirt and a reserve plate form which you will then mail to our contact within the DMV.   This cannot be handled in a regional DMV office.

If your current registration is less than one year old, you will not have to pay an additional registration fee, and will pay just the $25.00 plate fee.  If your registration is in its second year, the DMV will ask you to pay just one year in order to have a full, two-year active registration.

To make a Reserve Plate donation, please use this link (Donate to Foundation Page)  and then email us to let us know you’ve got the wheel rolling! We’ll also need your mailing address and T-shirt size preference.  We’ll send your application right away, along with an envelope for your application to be forwarded to our contact at the DMV.  The DMV will have your name on the reserved list and be awaiting your application.

To arrange your donation or if you have any other questions, please call or email us at SC Equality – info@scequality.org
