This week at the Statehouse
Two bills we are determined to DEFEAT.
As we close out another week at the Statehouse, I wanted to give you an update on two discriminatory bills that we are determined to defeat this year.
This week, SC Equality has been working with members of the House Medical, Military, Public and Municipal Affairs committee on gaining their support to defeat H.4716 at the committee level. We have also been in direct communications with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee on not allowing S.1087 from being voted out of committee as well this year.
While our state faces important issues like health care, infrastructure, education, etc., several legislative bigots have decided that filing discriminatory bills targeting
Last week, I sent out an Action Alert for you to contact your Senator and Representative asking them to oppose both of these bills. You haven’t let me down. Hundreds answered the call to action. However, we need more to make your voices heard and to show members of the General Assembly the LGBTQ community in South Carolina will not stand by and allow discrimination in our state.
IF YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN ACTION, PLEASE DO SO TODAY. THERE ARE TWO ACTIONS YOU NEED TO COMPLETE IN THE ACTION ALERT. SEND AN EMAIL TO YOUR SENATOR ON S.1087 AND ANOTHER EMAIL TO YOUR REPRESENTATIVE ON H.4716.
H.4716 – “YOUTH GENDER REASSIGNMENT PREVENTION ACT”

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, TO ENACT THE “YOUTH GENDER REASSIGNMENT PREVENTION ACT” BY ADDING CHAPTER 139 TO TITLE 44 SO AS TO PROHIBIT A PERSON WHO IS UNDER EIGHTEEN YEARS OF AGE FROM UNDERGOING GENDER REASSIGNMENT MEDICAL TREATMENT, TO PROVIDE FOR PROFESSIONAL DISCIPLINE FOR VIOLATION OF THE ACT, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

S.1087 – “INTERSCHOLASTIC ACTIVITIES ACT”

TO AMEND SECTION 59-39-160 OF THE 1976 CODE, RELATING TO THE REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN INTERSCHOLASTIC ACTIVITIES, TO PROVIDE THAT A STUDENT’S BIOLOGICAL SEX SHALL BE CONCLUSIVE IN A DETERMINATION CONCERNING WHETHER THE STUDENT MAY PARTICIPATE ON A TEAM COMPETING IN AN INTERSCHOLASTIC ACTIVITY THAT IS UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE.

Our daily presence at the Statehouse demonstrates the vigilance, persistence, and expertise required to make certain South Carolina laws protect and enhance the lives of all LGBTQ South Carolinians. As I have said many times, we have built personal relationships with legislators and demonstrated the ability to work across the aisle when needed. I need you to stand with us, Jeff, and if you haven’t taken the next step with the Action Alert do it today and tell legislators to protect transgender kids!
