Welcome to SC Equality

I have been an LGBTQ activist for over 30 years, working with several organizations around the country. But I can honestly say that out of all the positions I have held my recent years here at SC Equality have been the most rewarding. I knew when I took this position the challenges would be many, the fights would be fierce and the opportunities for advancing equality in South Carolina would only come once we have begun changing hearts and minds across the Palmetto state.

However, I have stood strong and resolute on my focus of ensuring FULL equality for all LGBTQ South Carolinians and I know first hand that SC Equality has made a difference on this long hard road for equal rights. I will not rest until the day comes where we can all stand up and say without hesitation EQUAL MEANS EVERYONE in South Carolina.

SC Equality is dedicated to securing equal rights and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) South Carolinians. Our accomplishments in the past several years would not have been possible without the support of so many individuals. While we have won some historic victories, OUR WORK IS FAR FROM OVER.

  • Marriage Equality – SC Equality won the now historic federal lawsuit seeking the rights of LGBT South Carolinians to marry the person they love.  On November 20, 2014, South Carolina became the 35th state to win marriage equality.

  • Defeated ALL anti-LGBT bills filed at the S.C. State House for the past 3 year – SC Equality’s presence at the state house has paid off.  While other southern states have passed anti-LGBT bills into law, SC Equality has successfully fought and defeated every discriminatory bill filed for the past 3 years.

  • Defeated the “transgender bathroom” bill –  In 2016, a transgender bathroom bill (modeled after North Carolina’s HB2) was filed at the state house.  SC Equality built one of the largest coalitions in history to fight this discriminatory bill.  After two days of public testimony and hundreds crowding into the hearing room, the bill never made it out of the full Judiciary Committee.

  • Criminal domestic violence – partnered with the S.C. Attorney General’s office asking the S.C. Supreme Court to protect same-sex couples (married or unmarried) under the state’s Criminal Domestic Violence Statute.

  • Won the right for same-sex couples to be listed on a birth certificate in S.C. –  SC Equality’s lawyers filed a lawsuit against DHEC seeking the rights of same-sex couples to be listed on a birth certificate.  In 2017, the lawsuit was settled and it is now allowed.

Our Vision: A South Carolina where everyone is equal.

Our Mission: To secure equal civil and human rights for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender South Carolinians and their families.

To fulfill this mission, SC Equality works through three partner organizations: South Carolina Equality, Inc. (SCE), South Carolina Equality Coalition, Inc. (SCEC), and SC Equality PAC (SCE PAC).

South Carolina Equality, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational organization:
SCE works to educate decision makers, the LGBT community, and the public about our issues, and works to organize and mobilize LGBT residents and allies to advance equality throughout the state. SCE is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, and donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
South Carolina Equality Coalition, Inc., a 501 (c)(4) political organization focused on advocacy and legislation:
SCEC is political action and advocacy organization that engages in lobbying the legislature and other policy makers throughout the state to enact fair legislation to advance equality for LGBT South Carolinians. SCEC is a 501(c)(4) organization, and as such, contributions to the Coalition are not tax deductible.
SC Equality PAC, a political action committee:
SCE PAC works to elect fair minded candidates to office, regardless of party affiliation. It was established in 2012 as a registered Political Action Committee with the SC State Ethics Commission. As a state PAC, focuses on elections for municipal, county and state offices. It is not authorized to participate in Federal elections. Donations are not tax deductible.

SC Equality is working on many fronts to build a better South Carolina by advancing equal treatment and full acceptance of the LGBT community. SC Equality envisions a fair and unified South Carolina where everyone is treated with dignity and respect and where all people live freely regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or gender expression.

To LGBT South Carolinians:

No matter how isolated, alone or afraid you may feel today, know that SC Equality hears you, we see you, and we stand with you.  And we will do everything to protect you going forward.

Gay rights are human rights,
